For the past few months, I’ve been thinking about all of the cleaning and organizing that I’ll have to do when I return back to the U.S this Fall. Seems pretty daunting right? The crazy part is, I’m actually looking forward to it.

You’re probably thinking, “Okay Diamond, what type of drugs did you take while you were in Berlin the past two years because you have lost every ounce of your God forsaken mind.” Okay look - hear me out. I’m excited because I get to go through all of my clothes that have been packed away for two years and PURRRRRRGGEEEE!

You remember all The Purge horror movies where people have 24 hours to murder each other without any consequences? Yeah, it kind of feels like that – but instead of the infamous amount of dead bodies lying around (I’m not THAT crazy, I promise), it’s clothing that’s dead to me, my taste, and my lifestyle.

Since Spring is here and you’re most likely inside with the windows open and probably singing with birds while wearing a hideous dress (because let’s be honest, you’re not going anywhere sis), here are 7 easy tips to help you while you’re purging your closet this Spring.

Keep Items that Make you Feel Like A Million Bucks

If you pick up a pair of pants and come to the conclusion that you would rather jump out the window of a 10-story building than wear those pants in public because they actually make you feel like an unattractive sack of potatoes – then you should probably get rid of them. Don’t torture yourself boo, you’re worth more than that. Keep what makes you feel like you own the world and everything in it. Keep what gets you excited.

Ask yourself: Does it fit your lifestyle?

If you're a CEO, working in corporate, or are the fashion editor of a major magazine – you will not be taken seriously if you are dressed in sweats and a t-shirt that is “holey-er” than you (get it because the shirt has holes and it’s a play on holy…okay nevermind). Be honest with yourself and acknowledge whether or not the item will fit your lifestyle and who you want to become.

Follow the One (or Two - let’s be honest) Year Rule

Ladies and Gentlemen: if you know DOGGONE WELLLLL that you have not worn that item that you’re looking at since God created this Earth – then I’m going to need you to be like Elsa and let. It. Go.

Purge Round 2

Put the knife down – I’m not talking about purging humans. Go through every item that you have again and make sure you want and love every item that you have. Sometimes you convince yourself that you love something even when you really don’t. If it doesn’t make you happy, feed it to the dogs.

Organize Items by Category

After you have gone through cleaning out your closet, organize everything that you’re keeping by category to make your life easier. First, sort everything by type (dresses together, crop tops together, jeans together, etc), then sort everything by color. Consider buying storage containers and better hangers (if needed). You can call me extra if you want to, but I promise your life will become easier especially if you can quickly find that red dress you need when you took 30 minutes longer than you should have to do your makeup.

Write A List of the Missing Items You Need

Honey – what do you need? Now that you’ve organized your closet, it’s a hell of a lot easier to figure out which pieces you need to round out your wardrobe.

-Oh snap, do you need a little black dress?

- Are you missing a white button-down?

- Did you realize those pair of shoes were as outdated as your most recent haircut?

Whatever you need, make a note in your phone of missing items. The next time you’re out shopping, you’ll know exactly what you need and it’ll help you shop intentionally.

Make a Toss, Sell, & Donate Pile

Let’s be honest, only having a simple toss pile can be both overwhelming, wasteful, and harmful to the environment. So, to make your life a bit easier, separate your unwanted items into three categories. You’ll thank yourself later.

Toss

Baby, if the soles of your shoes are flapping in the wind and talking more than you are - they GOTSTA GO!

Sell

Let’s be honest, we all love a little extra money (and if you don’t you can slide those extra coins to my account, I’ll be more than happy to share my payment information). If you have lightly worn or unworn clothes that are in good shape, sell the crap out of those babies. Post it on eBay, Poshmark, or your Social Media – someone will be grateful for your shirt and you’ll be grateful for their money.

Donate

If you’re too lazy to go through the process of selling your clothes, then donate them! Don’t be petty though and donate those raggedy shoes and stain-covered jeans – I’m judging you if you do.

I challenge you to take action now. Sis, go through your closet and stop doing yourself wrong. You and I both know you need to! Grab a friend if needed and have them help you and hold you accountable. Maybe you and your friend both need to get y’all lives together – share this blog with them and get to it! Your wardrobe will love you forever and your unwanted clothes will be excited to end up in the hands of someone who wants them.
